Ambassador Peter Thomson

Ambassador Peter Thomson is the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean, in which role he drives global support for UN Sustainable Development Goal 14, to conserve and sustainably use the Ocean’s resources.

Ambassador Thomson served as President of the UN General Assembly, 2016-17.

He was Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the UN, 2010-2016, during which time he led the Executive Board of United Nations Development Program (UNDP), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and United Nations Office for Project and Services (UNOPS) and was elected as President of the International Seabed Authority’s Assembly and Council.

He is a founding Co-Chair of the Friends of Ocean Action and is a supporting member of the High-Level Panel for Sustainable Ocean Economy.

Ambassador Thomson delivered the Opening Address at the WFC2021.
